Grandia is a role-playing video game, developed by Game Arts and published by Entertainment Software Publishing for the Sega Saturn console as the first game in their Grandia series. Released in Japan in 1997, the game was ported to the PlayStation in 1999, with an English version of the game appearing on the platform in North America in the following September by Sony Computer Entertainment, and in Europe in 2000 by Ubi Soft. The game was produced by much of the same staff who worked on the company's previous role-playing endeavor, the Lunar series, including producer Yoichi Miyagi and composer Noriyuki Iwadare.
Grandia is notable for its combat mechanics which have been carried over to future games within the franchise, and has spawned an expansion disk (Grandia: Digital Museum) and a spin-off title (Grandia: Parallel Trippers) - both released exclusively in Japan. In celebration of the announcement of renewing development on Grandia Online, which acts as a prequel to Grandia, the game was re-released on Sony's PlayStation Network platform in Japan as a downloadable title on April 22, 2009 and in North America on February 25, 2010. It was re-released in Europe on November 10, 2010. A high-definition remaster of the game was released in North America and Europe on August 16, 2019, together with Grandia II, for Nintendo Switch; a Microsoft Windows version was released on October 15, 2019. GungHo Online Entertainment clarified that a Japanese release of the remasters will follow in the future.
The game is set in a fantasy world of emerging technology and exploration. A young boy named Justin inherits a magic stone that leads him on a journey around the world to uncover the mystery of a long-lost civilization. Along the way, he meets other adventurers who join him on his quest, which draws the attention of the militaristic Garlyle Forces who seek to uncover the secrets of the past as well. Grandia received a largely positive critical response during its original release, and was voted by readers of the Japanese magazine Famitsu as the 73rd greatest game of all time in a 2006 poll.

Justin is a scatterbrained boy who dreams to be an adventurer like his

father and grandfather before him. He's very energetic, he jumps into every

challenge that comes across his way, and never thinks about the danger he

puts himself and his friends into and gets away with it all the time.

Justin's true power is an ability he never thought of, while it was so

obvious, and unknowingly he's been using it all the time. That ability

might be the key to open the way to unbelievable things.

A little girl with a "I'm not a kid"-complex. She tries really hard to act

like an adult and scold Justin for the mischief he causes in his desire to

be an adventurer. Sue is a bit bossy and act like an insufferable

know-it-all, but she means well and can be an emotional support when you

need her most.

Feena

Feena is an energetic young woman who enjoys every bit of her life as much

as she can. Like Justin she's an adventurer, and despite her young age,

praised as the best of the best.

At first she doesn't take Justin seriously but she'll quickly change her

mind about that, and will soon become the one who thinks things through

when Justin starts to act a bit rashly.

Feena is friendly, bright, and open-minded and cares a lot for other

people. If she has a fault, it might be she easily worries too much, but

then again, her trip will give her things to worry about.

Gadwin

Gadwin is a man of little words but his sword speaks for him. He's a man

who spends nearly all day training as he believes that will make him grow

as a man.

Despite the fact that Justin is just a boy, Gadwin sees a great warrior in

him and has decided to make a man out of him.

Tough Gadwin is not really well giften on the social part, he becomes a guy

Justin can look up to.

Once Disc 2 has begun the first one to join your group is Rapp. Rapp is

rude and uncooth, and always speaks his mind in the most awful way

imaginable. Still Rapp is a courageous guy, who's very loyal to his

friends.

Milda looks rough and maybe hardly feminin, but once you know her a little

better you find out she has a very gentle and kind personality and is

always willing to help those in need.

Guido

What-a can I-a say about Guido? He-a talks-a a bit strange, but-a he's very

wise, which is hardly imaginable by-a his looks and the-a way he talks.

Guido is a salesman who travels the world. He seems to know a lot about the

world's history and basically he is the wisdom that Justin so desperately

lacks.

Liete

Liete is the High Priestess of Alent, whom Justin first meets through a projection in the Sult Ruins. She inspires him to search for the mystical city of Alent to find the answers he seeks. Liete reappears at certain points on Justin's journey to guide him to Alent. When Justin finally meets Liete in person, he convinces her to join him in the fight against Gaia, and she becomes a playable character.
